The Staff

Roo is an internationally respected Scandinavian dance instructor and she and partner Larry are sought after favorites at many dance functions. Becky Weiss has played and studied extensively in Norway and Sweden. We are very fortunate to have persuaded these talented people to join us for this special weekend to introduce Scandinavian couple dances to the Brevard area.

The Program

(subject to change to suit the mood of the participants)

Friday February 4th – Evening Party

7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Scandinavian dances familiar to International dancers, some thing old and familiar, some thing new, all done while we celebrate John's Birthday

Saturday February 5th – Morning

Prelude 8:00 am – 9:00 am; Workshop 9:00 am – noon

How do they do that? Instruction to guide all of us into the joys of turning with a partner. If you've never really seen turning couple dances, this is the session for you. Even if you already enjoy the dances, Roo will show you techniques which will make it even more fun.

Saturday February 5th – Afternoon

Workshop 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

A continuation of the morning with perhaps a little something for those who enjoy set dances. The Scandinavians add their own flavor to these dances so familiar to the Americans and English.

Saturday February 5th – Evening Party

7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

A chance to enjoy what we've learned through the day, perhaps also some International, English, or Contra.

Sunday February 6th – Morning

Prelude 8:00 am – 9:00 am; Workshop 9:00 am – noon

It's John's birthday celebration. Roo has promised to work on some harder dances for those who already have at least some experience.

Sunday February 6th – Afternoon

Workshop 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

A recap of what we've done throughout the weekend for the benefit of those hardy souls who have stayed through the whole show.

Meals

Light snacks will be offered. Maybe more if we get enthused..

Fees

The workshop began as a birthday present that John Daly, the leader of the South Brevard Dancers, wanted to give himself. The workshop is offered as an introduction to Scandinavian dances with world class leaders and musician. There is no admission fee as such. Those who really enjoy the workshop are invited to contribute around $10 per session on Saturday and Sunday. But it's a party, no one is going to count. If enough people contribute, perhaps we'll do it again.

Directions

Choose your own best way of getting to Melbourne. All roads seem to lead to I-95, so from the intersection of I-95 and New Haven Ave (U. S. 192) go east on New Haven Ave. The first traffic signal should be John Rodes Blvd. The next should be Wickham Rd, followed by Minton Rd., and then Dayton Blvd. There is a Home Depot on the right, you want to make a left at this light onto Dayton Blvd. On Dayton, go almost to the end, just before the bridge there will be a wooden sign on the right saying "Historic Site -- Community House." This is Hall Rd. Turn right, yes it's a dirt road, and follow it to the building which looks like an old barracks painted white. That's exactly what it is. Park in front of the building or around to the back, but please don't block access to the town garage and impound yard, the swimming pool or the surrounding houses. We'll work out parking depending on how many cars show up. There's plenty of room but there's no designated places so we just have to use common sense.
